I'm planning to move to Calgary from the UK in April /May this year and I’d like to develop some contacts who work there and who would be happy to spend half an hour or so on the phone/skype with me telling me about their role and their opinion of the jobs market. Nothing too onerous :). Anyone happy to help?

I am planning to move to Canada in the next few months, the options visible are :
1. Alberta
2. Ontario

Alberta has Oil and Gas industry, but the if you see the overall manufacturing industry, then Ontario and Quebec are on the top of the list.

Therefore if someone has interest and experience in Oil and Gas exploration, then Calgary is the best place to move

Hi m,

I have a friend in Calgary with many years in construction project administration. I'd be happy to introduce you if you send me a private message with your email.

Additionally, join the local PMI chapter when you get there. http://www.pmisac.com/.

The feedback on the job market that you'll receive from any of us is based on news and that it IS an oil town, that has affected the economy, however there is more there than oil. I doubt you'll find an expert among us on the Calgary job market, but a quick search on indeed.ca and monster.ca revealed PM jobs. It only takes one right fit for you!

You may also reach out to agencies to assist in placement.

If, on the other hand, you're trying to decide whether to move there based on whether the economy is booming, then that's different, and I'd suggest you visit for yourself before deciding, if it's still up in the air for you.

Hi Michelle
thank you very much for your information and offer to help. The decision on where to go is a nightmare to make - so much choice and such a big place. We started out about 10 years ago looking in Vancouver (have friends there) but I wasn't excited by the high house prices, and so went to Calgary to have a look around. I like it there, but after spending 10 days there last year, my wife decided she didn't, and would far rather go to Vancouver. So it's kinna back to the drawing board. I have no experience in the oil and gas industry - my background is in product development, particularly in the automotive and power industries (no construction experience), so there's probably more opportunity for me in Van or other cities in Canada.
I'll have a look at the links you've included.
All the best

I lived in Vancouver for 6 years and I agree with both you and your wife! It's easy to fall in love with that city, it is booming, and the price of housing is obscene. Check out BC Hydro if you want to be in the power industry. I've only ever heard great things about them. They also have above average benefits and annual leave time, from what I recall.

Best of luck :)
