This is an excellent Harvard Business Review article with an actual successful office bully confrontation. I support the strategy recommended by the author.

A real life example for Project Managers to add to their bullying toolkit.

Have you encountered a similar challenge? If so, what did you do and what was the result?

Sad Story ! Well, bullying can get out of limit if not controlled from the beginning as some people has it built in and comes delivered with the package when they are born to bully other besides that it does cost money and lower productivity and causes lots of distractions. I had some employees who were bullying others but at a very low level and then only way to control it is to be strict and warn them. If they did not adhere then fire them because I believe there should be ZERO Tolerance for Bullying. This is a work place not a circus. This is my personal opinion.

The work colleagues I know who have done bullying showed signs of insecurity. Addressing that insecurity goes a long to fixing the problem.

Very nice topic and as stated it is the strong message for mgmt team. This need to addressed earliest if found at any cost, it does affect the organization growth and equal opportunity for employees.

As per HBR - its very clearly studied the impact as below
"Bullies are hugely expensive for corporations in terms of lost dollars, productivity, employee retention and wellness. The research strongly suggests that the only way to get organizations to take this issue seriously, particularly in competitive environments where bullying behavior is implicitly rewarded, is if it impacts their bottom line"

Insecurity is one among the cause, adding to this, the other causes are such race, color, sex, national origin or religion differences also contributes negatively towards the growth of company and it affects the bottom line.

Stop bullying @work.

Bullying is due to immaturity, inexperience, insecurity, shortsightedness, superiority complex and egoistic.
This should be stopped. this can be a team effort. By establishing ground rules of behavior and implementing the same, it is easy to arrest such incidents.

I have known people, who easily call themselves as "being neutral" are actually taking the easiest and safest (for them, until something similar happens to them) way.

There are also, groups which come together in an informal manner, like using BBM in a meeting to mobilize support and bullying against one individual and pretend as if it is happening out of consensus.

Hello Balaji, Sandiylan, Stephane and Rami. Thank you all for your great contributions. What I found interesting is that you come from completely different corners of the world yet all have been impacted by bullying. This is a global challenge for all industries, sectors and roles.

Insecurity is indeed one of the motivators. So are the need to control, jealousy, ego. Bullies usually perceive that someone is a "threat" to their drive for attention, success, and results.

I recently finished a book on Workplace Bullying and it supports all your perspectives. Thanks for sharing.

You are most welcome Paul. I haven't been directly impacted but I did have employees who used to bully others in the projects and I know exactly how it feels.

Yes it will Stephane. We are in final print copy review and expect it to be available within a couple of weeks. I will let you know. I'm also doing quite a number of conference presentations, workshops and events for chapters all over the place related to project bullying, including PMI Montreal in late Feb. It's a serious challenge for many PMPs.

I've contacted the Southern Ontario Chapter but haven't heard back from them. If you know anyone on their board or their VP Programs, I'd contact them to enquire about their plans. I'd be delighted to do an event their - it's my old university stomping ground.

Oh you've studied here - That's interesting. Well, unfortunately I do not know anyone there being new to this community. I am a member of the chapter in Kitchener but yet, I never met anyone from there. If I came across any one from there, I will keep it in mind for sure Paul. It would be great to attend one of your events.
