I work in IT project about 15 years.
On my hometown, HongKong, the jobs of IT industry is Ad-hoc, multi-functional.

From planning, development to testing, deployment.
As well as team lead, meeting, documentation etc.

From my last 3 jobs, 2 of them titles are System Analyst, 1 is Project Manager, and now it just Programmer (but it is good salary compare to others).

Some of my friend said it is wired that I got PMP, but not looking for the title - Project Manager, even thought I am already work as PM daily.

So what do you think, a PMP holder but the job title not PM?

Good question Cheung. The PMP Handbook states "Consider all of the projects that you have worked on and identify how many hours you spent leading and directing the project." So from PMI's perspective, it doesn't matter what your job title was, if you were leading and directing, it counts as Project Management.

This was my experience as well. I worked under many job titles, but was actually managing projects. In this situation, the more you know about the "framework" and the various modalities of PM (AGILE, etc.), the more tools you will have to excel at your job.

I totally agree with you Bruce and that's the right thing to do in order to become a solid PM.

Sure, there's plenty of people who work as a PM, and have the qualifications, but are not in a role titled PM.

Especially in smaller organisations (or small specialist teams in a larger organisation) that do not have the capacity or need for full-time PMs, people end up doing a lot of this, maybe even the majority of their time, without having the title.

In some organisations that have never at a high enough level recognised the value of PM, people move into doing it but there's no formal roles with the title in the organisation so they remain in a mis-named role.

Many Business Analysts actually do a hybrid role that is joint BA/PM.

I've done several roles where I had other responsibilities around management process, quality, risk etc that ultimately were mainly PM work but had other titles to specify more what I was PMing.

Project or program management is not always the whole scope of a position. My job title is Strategic Manager. One of my duties is program management of a couple of key customers' programs. As a Strategic Manager, I have many other non-PM duties. Project management is a valuable skill set which is useful for more than just traditional projects. Don't get too hung up on the title.

Being PMP, It is not mandatory mean we should work as only project manager. Project management is an skills which can be applied at any places, irrespective of Job name

Very Good Question? But i have been in the Construction Industry for the Last 8 years Only. I have worked from Medium to very High Budget Projects and No PM was present. In Oman the working standards in Small and Medium Enterprises is different, here even a Site Supervisor can act like a PM. Like what Bruce has mentioned, totally agree with him.

I also want to add this you don't have to get the PM level to become a PM, if you are willing to learn and drive the team towards the success of any project, that should be enough for the success of the project.

Yes, there are roles I have held that do not specifically state I am the project manager, but the reason I have the role is due to my PM capabilities. My current role title is Real Estate Specialist III but I manage environmental, design, and construction projects for my firm.
