Does anyone have any insights in to the value / recognition of CompTIA's IT Project+ certiifcation? (it used to be the Gartner cert.) Is it worth pursuing if I already have my PMP?

I'm planning to take the PMP exam next month and was wondering if it was worth pursuing the IT Project+ certification since I am already in study mode. Opinions appreciated.

I received my IT PM certification after taking a 40hr training course and an exam from Gartner Institute (now owned by CompTIA). I had already been an IT PM for 5 years which also helped. The CompTIA certification has opened more doors for me in the IT industry than the PMP would have. Several IT managers who understand the difference between the two admit the PMP certification is not IT-centric enough. You'll learn material w/the PMP that may be useful but I found the training with Gartner to be more relevant. Good luck!

I'm also going for my PMP, b/c my experience
has been that very few IT managers understand
that PMP is not IT centric as I see more
and more jobs calling for this cert, not
the only. Checkout DICE.Com as a reference

I am about to start a study group with two others to study for the PMP exam. We thought to follow a course of study for the foundational material, and later study directly for the test. In the meantime we had considered getting the CompTIA IT Project cert on the way to getting the PMP cert. because there are no experience requirements for taking the test that we know about. Has anyone else tried this? Any suggestions on study materials?

I hold both certifications and I can tell you that preparing for the exams was very different for me. I took the IT Project+ exam when it was the Gartner Institute one and prepped for it by attending a 5-day ITPM Core Capabilities Course. The terminology and processes are slightly different than PMI's. Course Technology published a prep book - http://www.course.com/catalog/product.cfm?isbn=0-619-06349-1.

The PMP exam requires more applied study, in my opinion, as it requires that you be very specific about terms and processes. There is also more math required, as well.

The IT Project+ certification is getting more play now that it is a CompTIA one. I hope it will gain even more interest as the year progresses.
