Does anyone know of a tool that can summarize many MS projects to provide a single view of all the projects underway? Our CIO would like a tool that could represent where the projects are in phase and time. i.e. If the project is in the Requirements phase and is it on schedule

I don't know of any one tool that will do what you ask. However, if you already have a project data base (which we do) we have found that a software tool called ProSight can generate what we need (status reports and views, charts, results of analysis) to help monitor/manage our portfolio ($350 million annual IT budget).

We reviewed several packages and found Pacific Edge provides the aggregate project planning and views needed.

There are many applications on the market that can provide the information you need. Prima vera and MS Project Central both very popular high end / low end systems have the functionality you are asking about.

Best one I have seen uses Excel - very open architecture - and describes portfolios of projects in exactly the way you describe. Can be loaded directly from MS Project and runs either as an excel worksheet or as a web based system. Look on www.citi.co.uk

You need to check out www.metier.com -- predictive portfolio management software that not only aggregates project data but also predicts performance based upon historical actuals.

I have found a tool that is truly brilliant.

The reporting tool is written in Java, and can run on most server technologies; it connects to the database implementation of MS Project and produces reports in plain English.

In fact, the forte of the company that wrote this software is not project management, it is transforming data into information using plain English.

Well worth a look - http://www.cogentex.com.
