Hi Shahab, two possibilities exist in my current experience - either the feasibility study takes place prior to the project, in order to create the project charter (so I have a project to upgrade an application and the feasibility study for it was carried out previously, in order to inform the business case for the funding to be released). Or, secondly, the feasibility study actually is the project (so the whole project's aim is to carry out a feasibility study into a multi million £ system replacement). It could also be possible for a project to include a feasibility study as it's first phase, moving onto delivery thereafter, but that would not work with our organisation's capital funding models.

You have to check the PMBOK. Before the initiation process you have to have a business case because the business case. To prepare the business case you need a feasibility study between all the alternatives but this is not inside the PMBOK process.

I agree with Tim's opinion - If you are referring to case I: Feasibility Study will lead to business cases and so on.

As for your second questions about requirements, of course collecting requirements is done prior to design.

Feasibility study is done to before planning of any project work. It is like business case.

Feasibility study can be a project itself.

Scope is not something which is part of any one document. As soon as the idea of the project is conceived, there exists a high level scope, which might not be very well-defined at that stage. This scope is subsequently refined in many pre-project activities and documentation. Scope exists in Feasibility studies, Business Cases, Statement of Work, Project Charter, Scope Statement and the is translated into various breakdowns and plans. So scope is not the property of any one document and it does not only exist within a project but exists even before the project was born. Every subsequent document refines and explains it. Formally, the most elaborated form of scope is Scope Statement which can then be converted to WBS.

I think it is a company choice to consider feasibility study as the first phase of project process or consider feasibility as a separate project depending on company budget management type.
