Hello All,
Currently I'm implementation and support engineer. I have participated in several project for implementing ERP. My role was pure technical one. I want now to shift to PM carrier. How can I make this shift? Does PMP certification is enough beside my 12 years experience in this field? Saving Changes...

If you are doing projects in your field you can grow as project manager. However if you are in operation it is not advisable after 12 years of experience to switch the career. Saving Changes...

Hi Mostafa: Do you mean by ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning ?
From my experience, having worked all these years in a pure technical role won't give you the overall required experience in project management. PMP certification of course would be great but you need the practical experience as well. It should not be difficult for you to make this shift since you are coming from engineering background and worked all these years with projects and implementation. To qualify for PMP, you need PM experience but not necessarily in all proccess groups but in case you did not qualift, you can start with CAPM then move forward to PMP. Saving Changes...
I suppose someone working on ERP projects for over 12 years, cannot be devoid of project management knowledge altogether, no matter even if it was mostly technical. You must have worked in any capacity in several ERP projects, sometimes helping the project manager in establishing his business case, preparing charter, plans and even execution, monitoring and control. I cannot believe you never learnt anything about project management from your experience. If you ponder minutely, I am sure you will be able to extract several hours of project management experience from whatever you have gained in last 12 years. In case you lack in certain areas, identify those, work and gain experience in those specific areas, when you feel you have requisite experience in hand, you can go for PMP. Moreover, it is not at all change of career or profession. You can still keep working on ERP projects and still be a project manager.

Hello Suhail,
I agree with you i was not far away from PM. But also I can't say i was with the required degree of proffision for PM. When i read PMBOK i found gaps in the way what i am doing. My concern is how easy it will be start making my work in a higher degree of proffision. I can consider my self as SME. But in the same time I cannot say I'm experienced PM. How to grap that experiance?

To implement ERP you have followed a path. And to acomplish each step in the path you have applied knowledge and practices. That is project management. Now you can decide if you will adhere to PMI´s PMBOK guide, IPMA, GPM or Prince2 practices. But what you did is project management.

Would it be fair to say that over the twelve years your level of leadership increased in each implementation project?
You may have started as a developer, then a senior developer, followed by architect or team lead?
You can build this technical leadership into project management. There is a high demand for technical project managers.
A good stepping stone would be to take on the role of product manager on a project. While the project manager's responsibility lies in the overall project, the product manager's focus is only the product. You have to champion the solution within and outside the project. Fight for its scope, quality and delivery. A good product manager will keep the project manager on her toes.

Stephen,
I appropriate your words. My role was tectno-function one means i was working with the business to get business requirement, mapping the application functions that fitts those requirements, setup application and make system and function testing, configure pilot cases and manage and hold user testing sessions. Deliver the final product to clients. But i didn't prepare any kind of plans such as risk, cost, communication, HR. But i was able do estimate how much time a task or activity will take or put WBS as in all projects we was working according to predefined methodolgy in ERP implementation. All i was caring about was the quality of requirement, future process model, mapping, testing, and setup documents.

I agree with Stephane on this matter.
If you are working as a technical team lead, you are a functional manager but you have been came across many projects during ERP implementation. Saving Changes...

You should start with ERP Implementation Processes, then take part in a ERP implementation management team, then take a chance to manage a team by yourself, and then of course get a PMP to promote your career.
