I like the “progressively collaborative” nature of projects, every project for me is a new opportunity to experiment my skills, learn new ways of doing things and continuously improve.

I am a parent to two kids, and like many moms I thought that I was multitasking and switching roles from being a mom to a project manager, but as years passed, I started gaining experience in being a mother and a project manager, I realized that the two roles have actually merged into one. I started finding striking similarities between the two roles.
For me Project Management is like good parenting and all my projects are like my kids and my love for project management / projects is unequivocal.

I love instilling values in my kids to prepare them to face life, as I lay foundation for my project’s success through effective planning
I love when my kids are in best of their behaviors, as when I hear my ( once upon a time) projects bringing in $$ and laurels to the organization
I love them even when they are not so good, I coach them to be disciplined, bring them back on track, as with my projects through effective monitoring and control
I love trying to come up with innovative toys that can be not only fun to use, but also help my kids grow intellectually as well, as with my projects to choose a project management tool innovative practices that makes it not only easy for my team to work, but at the same time helps them to make the most of their expertise.
I love reflecting back on their behavior, making them understand what is right and wrong as I do with project learning for continuous improvements.

Projects start.. Project end .. My unconditional love for project management continues !

Priya,

Heartwarming! You've got two projects at home (maybe 3 if your count your husband) and lots more at work.

Thank you!!

I train occasionally and always use the example that any parent is a project manager by default early in the first session. Your point is more generic about parenting though, I use the example of taking the kids to the grandparents overnight. Planning; assembling and allotting resources; time management; risk assessment and mitigation (cranky child syndrome); etc. Parents in the group usually can take the topic and fly with it identifying most of the elements of project management. Your point is interesting but parenting strikes me as less of a project than a program, the time frame is however long your alive. My children are 37, 35, and 30 and I feel no less a parent now than I did when they were born. (Probably more since when the first was born I had no idea what I was really getting into.)

I retired in 2015 though I still do a bit of consulting and training. I have run several types of projects over thirty years mostly in IT. I have always been interested in puzzles and project management is all about that. As a part of that particular skill is the ability to break things down into components.
It was my good fortune to build competent teams who made me look good; I always figured they were stars, my job was to make their job as easy as possible and stay out of the way. The best projects were the ones where we were able to avert issues from coming up rather than having to solve them on the fly.
The key thing for me was always to take sufficient time at the start of the project to make sure the goals that were being set were clearly understood by the people setting them, particularly the sponsor. Two things tend to get minimal attention and should be points of focus. First is where are we starting from; to get to a new destination you have to know where you are at the start. The second is that while everyone gets excited about the "what" the real thing to get a grasp of is the "why". That determines commitment and ultimately the success of the project. Every hour you invest in getting started out right saves you ten or more down the road.
