Sangeeta Prakash Head of Delivery, SEA| British Telecom Singapore, Singapore
Project Management….As I think about it, it feels like that is what I was born for. I was always meant to be in delivery, steering projects and programs in the right direction either by myself or by coaching other project managers. It was love at first sight. I knew it when I did my first project as a project manager decades back. It only got better with insights from PMI back then and other certifications and trainings along the way.

Have you ever seen the perplexed look on senior stakeholders that says “I have put in all the resources, there has been so much cost overrun and there are all these reports, but I don’t see an end to this!” or a comment saying “I don’t think this is going right? It is giving me sleepless nights”. How about one of your Project Managers saying, “I did the same thing in my previous project and it worked so well”

I have always loved to give that feeling of certainty to what seems like a BIG question mark in people’s minds. There are the right ways of doing things to deliver a successful project and then there are people who have minds of their own. Cultural influences and organizational constraints just take the challenge to a different level.

A project manager works his way through all the facets, ranging from managing project sponsors, displaying challenging leadership, creating a high performing team with a finger on the pulse of the project and leading from the front. I love the art of connecting that project management intrinsically demands.

Of course, there are days when I wonder what I am up against and if it is going to work out but then comes a new day and brings with it new ways of looking at problems with strong project management principles to back it off and to find a solution and I go on.. Isn’t that true love???

I work with construction projects. I like to be among the people and I love the social life (though temporary) develops at site. The work is not repetitive and is always there will be something exciting and challenging which make the team always lively. And more over at most times the challenge is unique. We are motivated by the benefit and value that a project is going to add to the organization and society.

I enjoy working with teams to achieve project success in the railroad industry. Being accountable for team performance and project results are similar to starting and continuing a business, which can be likened to a project, program, or portfolio. Everyday has the opportunity for achieving success, avoiding risk threats, solving problems, transferring knowledge, applying common sense to processes and decisions, and building and enhancing relationships with the team members.

Management skill sets apply across the entire project lifecycle - planning, initiating, executing, monitoring and managing, and commissioning and closing. It also involves vision, leadership and added value contributions in the business sphere including management knowledge areas for integration, finance, procurement, human resources, risk management, safety, quality, and environmental.

I love project management due to several reasons, but the two most important of them are:

The first reason is because I believe that through projects we can change for the better the reality of individuals, organizations and nations. There is no improvement without projects. There is no innovation without projects as well.

In this way, being a project manager gives us the opportunity to be "protagonists of prosperity".

The second reason is because it's amazing to work with others, as a team, towards common goals. The satisfaction of achieving goals along with our team is something we can not measure.

Loving PM, for me, started the day when for first time I felt identified with customer's wider bussiness objective needs further from architecture, aesthetics or cost of construction works.
I experienced that arrow shot years ago while I was discordantly working as an architect in a place where global vision, leadering and continous improvement (among some other important PM values) were not being properly considered, so PM and me had to move to a happier and most successful team way-of-getting-projects-successfully-done.

Love is important for every job, but is available in particular in project management because we have to do with people. And being successful as project manager means that the stakeholders are satisfied. You can tell they are satisfied if they love you.

I love my clients, my team, my task, my knowledge and how things fall in place after proactive planing and risk identification and how relieved everybody is after investing so much in a task. And I get back love from the team, from clients and from the profession.

It is a win-win or better love-love situation.
