Hi ,
I am a recent graduate from Colorado State University in the field of Master of Computer Information Systems. I had a Project Management course in my program which instilled my interest in Project Management Careers. I found it is very hard to break into the career field without proper certification and credentials. I initially wanted to do PMP but i don't have much work experience. Can someone suggest a good certification for me to do to get a foot in the door in the industry. I did my research , online blogs suggested CAPM , Scrum Master etc... But i am confused on what to choose. I have a Masters Degree along with the 35 PDU hours. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First gain work experience. Do some real hands on job technically. In the I.T domain, the role of the pure project manager is getting rare. First try to become a technical manager by following the programmer, architect route. That is going to take anywhere between 2 to 5 years. That is the time when you should decide on which route to pursue, and the certifications required for it. This is the right path.

If you think that technology is not your cup of tea, then go for CSM to decorate your name with a certificate. It is easy. You pay the fees, attend a course and take an easy test..you are a Certified Scrum Master, even if you do not have insights into true agile.

I will recommend the first option. Pursue technology first, before aspiring for managerial positions.

Hi,

in addition to what Rami and Pankaj have mentioned i would suggest to look for option where you can gain the needed experience and where you could apply your knowledge you have obtained while your master studys and may be doing CAPM; than you will develop this knwoledge in combination with real life expereince and this could be the base ground for your PMP certifcation and a careere as a professionell PM.
I would suggest to become a PMI member if you are not already and look for careere development opportunitys there.
For isntance they offer various volunteer opportunitys which are a good option for obtaining project expereince in several roles.

Best of luck,

Markus
Thanks Marcus,
Great contribution here
