I will tell you my experience from Construction Point of View: I've always used "Lead by Example Skill" and it proved success as team members were influenced by this and started applying the same and thus it helped building a great cohesive team.

For example: I used to be the first on site, see the manpower when they arrive on site. Only my presence there early morning, made a difference besides many other things which were "Lead by Example". Influencing your team would work perfectly if it was supported by actions "Walk your Talk".
