Hi there- I'm working on a project to write requirements for a service. Does that even exist? Every time I look for sample requirements documentation or an RTM, the examples are for products or software. I want to develop a customer service program using PM best practices and admittedly, I have ignored in the past (gasp) this activity in writing requirements. Can someone point me to a resource or a template? Saving Changes...

Crystal, I have seen an RTM for services. It describes capabilities and processes instead of systems or products. The rest of the requirements gathering process is the same: facilitate, elicit and document.

The answer is: ask to your client. Internal or External. And mainly ask to yourself

Sergio- If it were that simple. My client is very new to project management and they are not an IT-based organization, service-based. They have never put together requirements before. While I have copious examples of product-based requirements and can find many samples in the PMI BA Practice Guide, there seems to be a lack of service-based examples so they can wrap their hands around it.

Hi Crystal. All the separate parts of a service are included within ITIL, see sections 3-7 of this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITIL . Perhaps you could use that content as a basis to create a list of requirements? Saving Changes...

Crystal, you might want to take a look at Service Level Agreement (SLA) samples. They might be able to give you ideas for your service requirements.
If you cannot find something suitable, you could always give us a hint as to the service you are working on. The community might be able to quickly brainstorm some examples for you.

Hi Stephane- Thank you very much for the idea. I also developed a couple of examples for my client--I was looking for the easy way out. :)
