What type of organization structures have been implemented to support a true Agile environment? Stuggling to define how it should be different.

We are just starting our journey and discussing how our organization structure should be modified to support an Agile based environment. Really haven't been able to find much so looking to see what others have done. Thanks.

Interesting question, Kevin. I certainly look forward to the answers.

Some of the agile points I would consider in building an organization structure would be:
* ability to co- and re-locate employees, contractors and clients as required for projects
* creation of a culture that thrives on shared tasks (i.e., paired programming)
* fostering coaching and mentoring leadership, rather than supervisory
* a continuous improvement framework that constantly adds value and reduces inefficiencies

I realize that doesn't help you per se. It should, at least, provide some sample principles to guide you in developing the organization.

It's not too often one gets a chance to work on shaping the structure of an organization. It must be pretty exciting!

Agile methodology doesn't fit in all type of organizations. Agile framework is best fit for Product development and Software development projects.

To Truly be an Agile, the organization needs support from higher Management, The Use of Expert developers, eliminate the need of strict process flow and the idea of supporting incremental approach in such projects.

Great question. I am leading the seventh initiative to implement agile at enterprise wide in a hugh organization (while I have implemented it in other type or organizations). First of all, you have to understand that agile is not software or IT related, is not a method or methodology, is not definied for the manifesto. To understand that you can search for the USA DoD NSF/Agility Forum deliverables (1990). After that, the answer is (sorry about the capital letters): THERE IS NOT A STRUCTURE THAT WILL SUPPORT AGILE IMPLEMENTATION. Why? Because agile is not a matter of structure. What is the key, no matter the structure, is using the systemic approach applied to organizations. That´s means integration. That´s means flexibility (which is not the same to agility). And that is the hugh change to do. You can see Mr. Rick Dove´s book "Response Ability" which contains most of the results of the agility forum.

Agile works best in flat hierarchies. There are Project/Dev Managers on top then scrum masters and then the developers (Seniors and then juniors). I think this is what you are looking for.

Adopt Agile in an Agile manner - don't try to plan to be agile.

Use a basic process improvement or PDCA approach. Adopt a little bit of agile, determine where pain points arise and address those, then repeat.
