How do you improve communication in your team?
Which initiatives do you do to improve communication?
How do you improve your personal communication skills?

I think that the first point is to listen more the other persons. Any other suggestion?

One of the key things you are defining in your communication plan is what needs to be communicated by whom and to what audiences. Defining these items helps you clarify what media to use for communication. One particular struggle I have seen on projects is PMs who assume that everyone wants communication the way they do. So, of they love phone calls, they assume everyone does. If they prefer e-mails they assume everyone responds well to that. Defining which audiences respond well to which communication vehicles can be the difference between a well-functioning team and a failing one. Personally, I am fine with talking on the phone, but a follow up e-mail with the action needed will get a much quicker and more dependable response. In addition, be inventive. Use appropriate technology to communicate well. Create central repositories for documents so everyone has the latest version and, where possible, use those tools to keep communications fresh and on-target. Hope those strategies might help!

Thank you Mary Elizabeth, in particular for the consideration when you said "One particular struggle I have seen on projects is PMs who assume that everyone wants communication the way they do.". Probably I fell in this trap sometimes, I will try to improve this point.

It is a definitely a lesson I learned first hand ;). I found myself most effective when I sat down and considered the primary stakeholders and frequency of communication needed. That allowed me to have specific conversations with key stakeholders to find out what works best for them. Personally, I want an e-mail for everything or I will forget it. But I've worked with folks who accomplish nothing by e-mail but a 5 minute phone call can move the world. It's really about knowing your stakeholders. Which is, of course, one of the most difficult things!

A good communication plan is a good starting point, as others have said. You can tailor your message to the individual audience. You should put a feedback loop in place so you know if people have heard and understood your message.

Listening is a good place to start!

Thanks Elizabeth. Another point where I must improve is the feedback loop you mentioned. In fact sometimes we presume that the receiver has undestood the message, but this isn't granted in particular if the receiver has a background different from us,

There can be plenty of suggestion.

In short communication means sending information from sender(you) through coder(language, verbal, non-verbal, body language etc), medium(interpersonal, email, meeting etc), decoder(translator) to receiver. There are sometime noise between the communication, It is your responsibility as a sender to ensure your message receives properly. So here comes the feedback.

We read in books lot about the verbal, non verbal medium and language of communication. If you want to be effective read them and coach your subordinates .

In project management communication plan means you identify who require an information and why. Accordingly it is managed.
Thanks Pankaj, when I said improve communication in my team I intend exactly reduce the noise between communication to ensure my message is received properly.
About the read you referred, have you any suggestion to start? Thanks in advance.
