Hello All,

I have recently completed the PMP Certification and going forward I would like to know, what is the best way to utilize PMP Certification. In my company right now, I didn't get chance to showcase my PMP strength or in other words we don't follow all the processes to handle IT Software project because of various reasons like customer pressure, pressure from management etc.

Let me know what are the other area where I can utilize my PMP Certification ?

Thanks in Advance !

First, let me say, there is no company in the world that not follow one of the process defined inside the PMBOK or similar. If you search then you will find that in some way (formally or informally) they are working with scope, risk, time, etc, etc. Second, if you are PMP then you can use all your learn in your company. Thrid, you will not use the certification. The certification said nothing about you (search for the certification defiition inside the certification handbook) except that you are able to use what you learn. The best way to get expertisse as project manager is to continue inside the organization you describe and to be an agent of change. You have to apply what you learn in the way best suited for your environment no matter the organization is aware. When you see that you are creating a change in the whole organization about project management then you have own a doctorate in project management. The situation you describe is the best to become a senior project manager. In the minetime search for some mentor inside the PMI local chapter.
Thanks for your suggestion.

I am totally agree with your all the point's but to showcase my expertise/skills I need to have right opportunity at right time. I will wait for the right opportunity and help management to understand the importance of Project Management.

I found sharing/transferring the knowledge is a good idea going forward. This will keep me updated and also help to grow my network.

Congrats Sanjeev on achieving this milestone, you might want to start by getting some PDU's for the next cycle. If part of your role in projects is to provide things like project status or planning you can easily throw in a few templates that reflect best practice when communicating with stakeholders,(if this is not against your company policy), and whatever you do , DO NOT stay far from projectmanagement.com, I learn something new here everyday..... ...........PMI-PMP's saving the WORLD since 1969...

Congratulations Sanjeev.

I would say:

1- Try influencing the company decision makes to start following the processes by providing cost benefit analysis of how would these processes improve the operations.

2- Volunteer

3- Participate in Forums, Discussion, Write Articles

4- Last resort would be as Markus mentioned to change the employer.
Thanks for giving valuable feedback.

My suggestion would be, start applying the key aspect of Project management that you learnt. I would suggest you can very well implement or practice these area's such as establishing stake holders, building the project scope, Developing a master schedule, Develop a communication plan, Do risk analysis.

These are all the knowledge area's which is essential for any project and others can see the value in it upon its implementation. That's where you will get a buy in from your organization which will help you further to get penetrated on the inner core concepts.

Practicing by your self in your projects will not be stopped or questioned by any one.

Hello Sanjeev,
I believe there are 2 or more options , the Live Webinars and the On-Demand webinars, the On-Demand is pretty much a live webinar you did not catch up with, you get PDU's for watching either live or recorded webinars. Information on what type of PDU's you are qualified to get is stated under the topic of each webinar. You can also take part in Virtual conferences and seminars, I believe there is one coming up in March (PMI Scheduling Conference 2016) ensure you register for this, events like this are awesome and FREE. Make use of the Webinar and Event sections for such information..... see you around

Consider taking on special initiatives or leading special events for your organization to utilize your skills or volunteering for your local PMI chapter or a non-profit or NGO in your local area. There are so many ways to utilize your new skills. And - Congratulations on your achievement!

I agree with the suggestions of volunteering and obviously try to practice whatever you can in your ongoing projects.

Above that , I feel PMP certification is effective in changing your mindset in the way you tackle problems in life. Atleast that has happened with me. :)

I was blessed with twins last year , and it was indeed a big ' surprise ' project thrown at me by life :) . It required planning of ' pre delivery ' , then post delivery. i actually made several checklists - right from baby merchandise to pre cooked food ..and things go on....

We come face to face with PMP facets all the time - whether we realize or not !. Lets handle our challenges better..

The Best way is to Pick up the Process defined in PMBOK and implement them in your Project in a formal or informal way,up to the extent possible. The result will change your management prospect.Certification is for credential only and implementation is worth investing.

Sanjeev, I may have not understood your point correctly. But, I think, if your organization is (and you are) into projects then you are definitely using PMBOK Guide processes. You may not be using all the TTs but you would be using the processes relevant to your projects.

e.g. you would be certainly be scoping the work, estimating the activities, preparing the schedule, assigning the resources, communicating etc. Without these processes, no project happens.

It is also possible that PMs are not following these processes properly but them PMs are to be blamed for that and not the organization.

Nonetheless, others have already mentioned how you can contribute to Project Management. Like ding voluntary work, contributing to the knowledge-base etc. If you wan to write www.projectmanagment.com is a good place. Or you can do guest blogging on http://www.pmbypm.com The articles will be published under your name with your photo.

All the best.
