Yes, it helps.
You get to know complexities in project working. At times you have to be point of contact which gives you chance to be in PM's shoes.

You are responsible for everything same like PM, but you are not accountable. It is good and acts as a next step to become PM.

Yes it definitely helps.
I was a second man before becoming a PM.It has not only helped me to understand what are the challenges with respect to project management and skills needed to handle them but also it gave confidence to my senior management to give me an opportunity after i proved myself by being the second man.

We all were third then second men before we became PM's and this is how we learned all aspects of Project Management. It is definitely the right thing to do and very beneficial if you are planning your career path properly ans in project management specifically, it is not advisable to climb the ladder all at once. You have to climb it one step at a time so when you reach the top you can stay on the top and never fall down.

A great learning opportunity!

I totally agree with Gina. Sometimes the only way to gain experience on bigger projects is by taking an assignment as assistant-PM or Project Administrator.

Of course!
Let the manager trust you and he/she will delegate to you some of his/her functions. What better opportunity than that!
