Perhaps I do not answer your question but I prefer this answer trying to add something. We report anything our stakeholders needs to know using the format they understand by transforming data into information. In the last 10 years we are using the concept named "manage project by value" so we publish which is valuable to our stakeholders. We are working with a framework that has taken concepts from MoV and MoP.

Following on Sergio's coat tails, I would say you have to find out what are the key performance indicators the projects are influencing. Then show how the projects improve them.

Dear Conrad, Nice question :) @Sergio/Stephane thanks for your insights :)

From my side :

1. We are doing monthly Dashboard - Which covers Project Progress (incl Variance) , Next Steps, Risks / Issues/Dependency and its status, Milestones (Chart). Decision Taken / To be Taken. we have two dashbaords, Executive and Detailed.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you.

I agree with Stephen and Sergio in what ghey've mentioned.

It depends on many factors such as to whom this report is going and why ... You have to send the right information on the right time in the right format.

From my side metrics are:
% project completed on time
% project completed on budget
mean delay of the project on delay
# project currently active
# of change request opened in the period

Up to type of project management methodology which you apply for your project, in my experiences, some content of metrics:
1. Waterfall/ hybrid: for banking, government sector, we have monthly, annually reports about completed work, going plan work on comprehensive picture, CR and risk activities.
2. Scrum methodology: for software outsourcing, we use weekly report, sprint report about finished activities and remain work of sprint, time, cost and quality of sprint delivery.
