Well, scoured the net, emailed renowned authors of books and still cannot find an estimation tool that can be used for a Data Warehouse. I've demo'd SPC's product (excellent) but its for a software development project, programming intensive and based on Function Points or LOC.
What I need is something which can either
a) estimate the entire Data Warehouse project, programming and all
or preferably
b) a product that would allow me to estimate the data effort in building a Warehouse, ie logical model, physical dimensional model, implementation of tables, DBA effort required, number of legacy systems and each systems respective number of record formats, data cleansing allowance etc. etc
I would be interested if anyone had any Data Warehousing rules of thumb for estimating.
e.g. a% of effort in requirements b% in design / architecture c% in ETL (with/without tool) d% in Reporting
This is our first Data Warehousing project and I'm finding it very hard estimating without any experience or historic data. Is there a knowledge base of Data Warehousing historic project data anywhere?
We are using the Actaworks ETL tool and Business Objects for Reporting.
