IIBA has not been very successful generating the virtuous cycle of renewal for the BABOK. By this I mean they ended up hiring someone to rewrite it for the most recent version so you get a limited point of view on that front. The CBAP is hard to get. The application itself is designed to trip applicants up. It is quite possible to answer the questions on the application wrong and get your application denied. If applying for the CBAP strongly recommend the Larson's book which included a template to help applicants get through the application gauntlet.
PMI is exceptionally good at establishing the virtuous cycle of renewal in terms of cyclical additions to the value of their certifications. The reading list for the present PMI-PBA is really essential reading for any serious business analyst. The certification is new but PMI has a better track record. I've volunteered with both organizations and see the merits of any self improvement so I'll decry neither but would express a preference for the PMI-PBA. Whats the value of my preferences though? I'd always encourage people to go out and they CBAP and PMI-PBA into Monster and see what the job benefits are. Right now both show up at pretty low level on a search on the cert name only. So both are just becoming something employers think about. CBAP is more popular on the Monster search today, but for having been around for a very short time the PMI-PBA is certianly an upstart. I'd invest in the PMI-PBA, but respect both deeply.
