IIBA has not been very successful generating the virtuous cycle of renewal for the BABOK. By this I mean they ended up hiring someone to rewrite it for the most recent version so you get a limited point of view on that front. The CBAP is hard to get. The application itself is designed to trip applicants up. It is quite possible to answer the questions on the application wrong and get your application denied. If applying for the CBAP strongly recommend the Larson's book which included a template to help applicants get through the application gauntlet.
PMI is exceptionally good at establishing the virtuous cycle of renewal in terms of cyclical additions to the value of their certifications. The reading list for the present PMI-PBA is really essential reading for any serious business analyst. The certification is new but PMI has a better track record. I've volunteered with both organizations and see the merits of any self improvement so I'll decry neither but would express a preference for the PMI-PBA. Whats the value of my preferences though? I'd always encourage people to go out and they CBAP and PMI-PBA into Monster and see what the job benefits are. Right now both show up at pretty low level on a search on the cert name only. So both are just becoming something employers think about. CBAP is more popular on the Monster search today, but for having been around for a very short time the PMI-PBA is certianly an upstart. I'd invest in the PMI-PBA, but respect both deeply.
Andrew - interesting...

I would like to share a video where I have discussed difference between CBAP and PMI-PBA with Abhijit May who has done both the certificates successfully: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgZi0sHytD0

Hello to all,

George, thanks for putting the question. I also have the same doubt.
I got interested with requirements management back in 2007. I did my master thesis in it. Identify and manage product/service requirements is crucial.
At that time IIBA had just put a document online with the best practices.
Meanwhile i took the PMP but since most of my work was related to procurement (RfI and RfP), i decided to go for the CBAP.
The issue is that now i have to "relationships" with 2 "different" associations.
One of the cons are the payment dues.
I put so much effort on the CBAP that i'm not thinking about doing the PMI-PBA.
Hopefully this year i will do ACP. Afterward planning to apply the PgMP.

It it was today, i didn't do the CBAP it doesn't make much sense to do it apart of PMI.
best regards

Very interesting thread, since I was facing that same issue as to which vendor I will choose for BA certification.

From what I have read, a PMI-PBA applies to those who are working in a project environment, and are in a hybrid PM/BA role. While, the CBAP certification is for those working in a higher corporate environment.

For myself, Laura made an excellent observation, which resolved my dilemma. I decided on a PMI-PBA certification since my employer is aware of PMI and has an existing relationship with them. Maybe afterwards, I'll go for the CBAP.

Thank you for this discussion, it definitely helped me make a decision.
