The primary objective of project quality management is to ensure the project will meet or exceed the stakeholder’s needs and expectations. The project team must develop a good relationship with key project stakeholders, especially the sponsor and the beneficiaries of the project to understand what quality means to them. One of the causes of poor project performances is that the project focuses only in meeting the written requirements for the main outputs and ignores other stakeholder needs and expectations for the project.

In project management, quality means delivering the project within scope, within the allocated budget, and within the agreed schedule. Whether you are working for a construction company, engineering services, or information technology projects, you need a team to run quality assurance tasks. You must possess the appropriate knowledge and skills in order to perform your role as a quality management professional that include the following:

> Quality management planning that determines quality policies and procedures relevant to the project for both project deliverables and project processes, defines who is responsible for what, and document compliance.
> Quality assurance processes that are used effectively to produce quality project deliverables. It involves following and meeting standards, continuously improving project work, and correcting project defects.
> Quality control processes that monitors project deliverables to verify that the deliverables are of acceptable quality and the customer is satisfied.

Assuming you do have the above skills and knowledge, do you think a certification in QA is necessary or just PMP is sufficient?

Agree with Pankaj that skills and knowledge comes with the experience, but certification increases marketability of those skills. Being into the QA, you can go for Lean Six Sigma Green/Black belt.

I agree that you do not need to be certified to lead the QA Team but you must have skills and knowledge about quality and experiences in this area.
I agree. In my previous company, QA Managers/leaders are not required to be certified (particularly in the BPO industry) as long as you meet the skills and knowledge about quality and have gained the required experience.
Although some industries i.e. manufacturing require certification to lead the QA Team.
