I have observed recruiter often looking for project manager from same industry irrespective project management skills.
In my view, it doesnt matter the project manage handling IT projects or construction project as long as he is well versed in process of project management.
whats your view?

in my opinion , both must get equal opportunity for interview rather than just select based on IT or Non- IT

Hi Sandeep, Everything is not about fair opportunity. No employer will waste unneccesary time and resources to search a person from mass of different profile.
Regarding your question, a project manger should always have necessary technical skills and experience to understand and manage the projects in a particular industry.

When you have a choice of candidates, you will recruit the one most suitable for the job. And when you have too many choices, you may not invite all of them for interview. So you select the most qualified for interview. This is common sense, right? So if you rank the priority, will you prioritize the one with experience in your field? (Of course, there are many other criteria for consideration in priority.)

I will definitely take person who is more suitable for the role with experience in relevant background, this is always going to be an advantage. One does not know when the experience from the relevant field will come handy in successfully meeting the project expectations.

Sandeep,
when looking at the purely project management related aspects, I agree that the industry is not the primary driving factor.
Still, every industry, even every company has its individual environment with rules, regulations and culture.
When hiring new skills it will depend on your goals:
- If you need somebody being able to quickly jump into a specific industry-related or company-related topic, you will look for someone with knowledge in the industry or even experience with the company.
- On the other hand, if you look for fresh ideas, an outside view, implementation approaches which are not common practice in the company or industry, you might be better served with somebody from a different industry.
Ultimately, experience in particular industries will be an aspect among others in the recruiting process. The significance of this aspect depends on the target environment and on the goals of the recruiting company.

In theory it does not matter

In practice - huge difference. Most people from IT or Technology or Business Project have no idea what a construction project and the complexity of construction projects. Further, the construction industry is much more mature in term of Project Management practices than the others. One final comment, construction people are usually proud people - they reach a PM level by hard work and years going up the rank; so they never readily accept a person from IT (regardless how experience that person is).

Hello Ajam,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
I don't think it's easy to become project manager in IT industry either. However, I still believe when it come to project management of large project, it's all about your skills of project Managment to execute the project.

For any technical skills each company have technical lead, if company is expecting project manage to be technical as well then it will directly impact his/ her abilities to perform the project management activities.

In case of small project where budget is always limited , organisation expect PM to lead technical activities as well, in that case the importance of relevant experience is must.
Have a good day

Cheers

Mounir, when you said.."construction industry is much more mature in term of Project Management practices"

Are you talking in general or country specifics? Also, what do you understand for mature? Are your comments related to organizational project management maturity or the project management office (PMO) maturity?

Thank you for the clarification.

Purely mismatch, though both have project management skill set, application area differs. Work processes, entities, deliverables differs. Anyway Project manager not only learn & enhance project management skill but also learn technicality involved in projects, their relationships over the period his experience, It is very difficult for High-rise building construction project manager to lead, deliver complex automation project. Because he need to start understanding development, coding, platform, technology, server, testing, clients expectation in terms of technicality & much more beyond project management expertise.

Hello Jitendra,

Thanks for your reply.

No project is execute by only project manager it's required team efforts. Project manager need to gather all the information from team and must seek advise fro team to prepare the plan.

I must say only research specific project need the experience or relevant background project manager, except that all project can be handle by any qualified project manager with required resources.

Have a nice day
Cheers

Since much of Project Management can overlap with Business Analysis, a knowledge of the business (or type of business) is a major advantage. The learning curve for someone from a different business can be longer and more difficult when assembling requirements and change controls, validating estimates, understanding and managing risks, etc. And just vocabulary in general.
