Does anyone have a great spreadsheet or software that can be used for PMO capacity planning with multiple projects?

I am currently using an MS Excel spreadsheet, but want to explore other and better options.

Thank you for your help!

You can use MS-Project 2013 better than your spreadsheet. Primavera will be costly !

Hello Karuna,

In my opinion, that would depend.... Integrated Master Scheduling tools such as MS Project are not best suited for recurring manufacturing planning in my experience. I believe they are primarily intended and best suited for non-recurring efforts (development efforts and projects).

Hi Philip, thanks for sharing about your current work.

Few questions :
1. What you mean by great spreadsheet ? i.e why you find Excel is not the great one ?
2. What stops you achieving the desired result ?
Can you please share some details about your capacity planning?
This will help me and members to come out with ideas and our views.

Thank you.

Hello Philip - it would help if you could provide some sort of additional detail. Is this manufacturing? What types of product and quantities/factory throughput and frequency of deliveries are we talking about?

Excel can work very well, you just may need help creating a good template with the right information and formulas. The next step/evolution would be using an MRP system with various types of reports, however MRP systems sometimes are not as flexible depending on what system you are using and the results you are looking for. A lot of times, you will integrate the two. This is assuming your organization has an MRP system to begin with which may or may not be within your budget.

Cheers,

Patrick
