I am a part time student going for my BS in Project Management. This program is an accelerated part time program (each course is a full semester condensed into a 7 week course). I've been in the Construction/Engineering (CAD drafter) business for 20 years but I do not have much experience with projects. Of course I've been involved with a few projects over the years but nothing that can show deliverables. In my Introduction to Project Management course I just took I realized that a lot of the ideas behind Project Management were very similar to my experience in the Marine Corps. How can I adjust my resume so "CAD drafter" doesn't jump out? I have a big career fair this Thursday and I'll be handing out a lot of resumes. I'm hoping to find an Assistant PM/PM position.

Besides going to school full time (I was laid off for a year and a 1/2) I was doing Document Control/CAD drafting for Biotech companies. Basically manage all drawings (There are thousands of them) for all the buildings. I handle all of the drawing changes internally. With the projects, my job is done before or after the project(s). A lot of the drawings are done because of routine maintenance. It's explained much better on my current resume in my profile.
I often take projects that are purely as a team member just to keep my technical skills up to date. One thing you can do is list your projects and then "my role". On the resume, these are two columns. For here, the columns are separated by 3 dashes.
Project Overview --- My Role ETL and OLAP support for the "project name". Built prototype cubes for Claims and Provider data using Microsoft Analysis Services. Established standards. Data quality analysis. --- Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Specialist "next project": Business Requirements and Logical Data Model. Mapping of data elements to reporting requirements. --- Data Warehouse Specialist Platform assessment for the "3rd project name". Gap analysis. Database, OS, and BI tools evaluation and scorecards. --- Systems Analyst Business Intelligence environment for "functionality added by project" MS Analysis Services, Brio, and Excel: development and implementation. Initiated Data Mining. --- Project Lead, Business Intelligence Specialist

Problem is that I really don't work on tons of projects. I'll have to figure out which ones I can place as projects and list them the way you suggested. I'm in a unique position in the Biotech/pharmaceutical world. My stuff is usually all done before or after a project.

David, curious, are there professional resources available where you are attending school to offer resume writing tips? This is often a complex issue when attempting to create a resume and not shine too much daylight in one area while placing emphasis in another. I used a professional resume writing service agency and they are worldwide. I know there are sample resumes (PM) on PMI.Org and any search on the web will return numerous examples that you may download for free. I think the best way to create a resume is to 'borrow" snippets of various formats and come up with your own. Is this a perm position or contractual? All contracting agencies will draft your resume to target the role to perfection as both parties make money - you and the agency.

Funny you should ask. I just sent an email to them asking about my resume. So we'll see what they say. I'm attending a big career fair with the potential to land a permanent position. I don't graduate for 2 more years but I figured I would get a head start on what I want to do for a profession. Especially since I'm not a newbie right out of school.

By itself, the nature of what you did is a project despite the fact that it is part of a project so you can describe what you did during initiation, how you planned it and executed then how you monitored and controlled drawings and how you closed everything with the as-built at the end.

I brought my resume to my school and they said don't change a thing. Career fair was ok. It was more towards Co-ops and new hires but it was good networking.
