I found that experience should be the last thing that you rely on when taking the PMP Exam. Like you I have relatively 5 years of PM experience and work in a Healthcare IT department as a Project Consultant. I became certified last month. I took a very good prep class which was M-Th (8a-6p) then took my exam that Friday. The week was very intense but without it I believe I would not have passed even though I spent conservatively 50 hours ready the PMBOK and other materials. The test not only covers the PMBOK but also about 7 other sources. The class that I attended introduced us to the other sources as well. Saving Changes...

What prep class did you take for the Exam and what other sources did you use? Saving Changes...
To answer your original question. You need 35 hours of accredited education to sit for the test.
You can take a course or get your hours from other approved sources. International Institute of Learning (www.iil.com) offers a great package for $850 that provides 37 hours of credit. Rita Mulcahy also offers some great materials if you don't want to attend a class.
The PMI course I have taught in WA last 7 Saturdays and cover all 10 subject areas that the test covers and provides the 35 hours of credit.
Most PM Training companies offer prep courses with the requsite number of hours. I know ESI, International Institute of Learning, George Washington University, and almost all colleges offer courses. All you have to do is open a search engine like www.google.com and type in PMP Prep. You will find tons and they can range from $500 to $3,000. Saving Changes...

PM means Manager of a Project. He/She needs knowledge and experience. Just knowledge will never service the purpose. For a consultant apart from knowledge, its experience which pays dollars. Just certication will not justify the role as PM. In case of Software development, experience has more weightage not just certifcation. Well, estimation and management comes only if one as been to 'war zone' and not in classroom/boardroom. Saving Changes...
I read PMBOK and Rita Mulcahy's book and passed the PMP test the 1st time. About 50K PMs are certified with 10K of these folks being in IT. PMP certification means more career opportunities, but quality experience and a proven track record still matters. Saving Changes...
I would recommend Career Academy (http://bit.ly/2fnjzjJ) for PMP training and exam prep courses. They have a good price for their annual membership and they are PMI Registered Education Provider (REP). Career Academy is an institution that offers online on-demand video-based learning solutions for IT Networking, Cyber Security, Project Management and Office Professionals. You can prepare for the certification exams by taking courses from Career Academy. Saving Changes...
