After I saw someone post an answer to another question, I decided to post this tricky question...

experience then certification for 5 years and up workplace experience and the other way for entry level people

Think... when you are young fresh out of university and maybe with one entry level role, how can you boost you career path except with a certification.

On the other side people with years in the work place, then go for PM certification to advance their career. It's well know that you can only advance 2 way: jump ship or get some accreditation.

I believe both go hand in hand together. Depends on the type of certification. Some Microsoft certification are required to qualify for certain jobs. Some certifications like PMP require experience .
In my opinion one need to keep oneself updating in the latest technologies and get certified to prove ones worth. As they say ' You keep learning you keep earning'.

"You need to have experience to get certified, so having both the experience and the certification can lead to an even greater job. In the 2009 market when I was laid off after 17 years at the same company, and where all my PM experience had been learned OJT, you could not find a good job without a certification. Both are important. Certification means you should speak the same language, know the same rules and processes as everyone else that is certified. Experience means you have applied those rules and processes as well as probably thought outside the box to get things done. They go hand in hand."

You can always go for CAPM first and later on PMP

I think they should go side by side. First of all you have to determine your professional goal. Then you work on that by gaining experience and getting certified.

In my personal opinion, certifications apart from qualifications (such as Bachelor's or Master's, or MBA) will immensely help you to get the most out of your industry's vast knowledge database and experience which you can gain from your fraternity and share within. While you can share the knowledge during discussions, or presentations, the standards / recommendations etc., where it is clearly mentioned that the same can not be resent or copied without permission of institutions such as Project Management Institute, we need to abide by; This is the very reason, that we can recommend our colleagues to join the professional group, by becoming a member or by clearing the exams and continuing to be certificate holder. Because of the rules and regulations, it becomes difficult to gain certification before you gain certain years of experience even though you might have degrees. But it is worth the try and the joy and happiness it gives when you feel, when you clear the exam, when you attend the meetings, when you can attend the conferences and share the knowledge with younger generation expecting nothing in return. My personal belief is knowledge of your professional attachments, brings you and your company supreme confidence and future. You will reap rich returns if only you work smart (hard) , which of gets multiplied if you are certified, because you will be recognized immediately across the globe as one among the teammates who are having common goals set out.

I think certification can be used as a entrance pass to gain the experience.
As we know how hard it is for one to get a job in his desired field i think the certification can tell you that he is serious about the field and if any potential then he can be considered.
I do agree experience plays a vital role and if for a mid level or an associate certifications should have an edge over experience.
