You need to first gain experience and then acquire certification. Certification will give a credibility and enhances your image as a professional

There is a shift to where you need a certification to get the job, I was always told to get the cert then go get the job because eat lets you have something to advertise yourself with. Experience does matter a lot but companies want the certification now with the experience

Broad experience is the most important, in my opinion. I know lots of people with volumes of book knowledge, but they do not have a clue about applying that knowledge in anything other than the very narrow range of their experience.

You start appreciating the work you are doing and your confidence level is high if you have experience before certification. The entire process of certification gets easy once you start connecting what you learnt while conducting real time activities both in present and past.

Its like chicken and egg problem and depends on the situation.
In the first case (certify and get a job to earn experience), one is narrowing the scope of job search for the job relevant to the certification.
In the second case (acquire experience and obtain certification) is like demonstrating the experience and enriching the skills.
Both are required and one has to choose depending the on the situation warrants.

Acquire the experience and then certification. It helps cause you will know what works and what doesnt. It also gives you a direction in case you were stuck before. I had a lot of PM experience before I attempted the PMP. But when I did the PMP it did give me more depth and some options which I had not thought of before.

Experience is the best certification possible. In my opinion, it's impossible to understand the PMBOK content without previous experience. Also the experience makes easier to pass the exam for the certification.

Hi George, It goes hand in Hand. First the experience made platform for certification & then the certification made platform to enrich experience!

I believe experience comes first, I mean it helps an individual understand Project management better before being certified.

I believe experience before certification. that way the certification acquiring process be meaningful and educational - you will be able to understand all the theoretical knowledge and give yourself real-life examples from your experience.
