After I saw someone post an answer to another question, I decided to post this tricky question...

What if I shift the question a bit, is would all answers be the same?

You are an experienced or even an SME in certain areas, but you decide to change carrier path? Given your professional maturity, would a company give you the opportunity to do an intern, would you want to do it for free or for less?

In other words, earning experience in a different area, other than one you can actually develop in your current workfield could be complicated, thus, making it difficult to earn the needed experience to earn a certification and switch SME area. Everyone want to see the little paper with your name to give you a chance to work with them.

I'm just posting some inquiries, not necessarily a final thought.

Agreed with Hemant, certification, experience all go together hand in hand in order to reach to successful level of expertise. In order to do certification experience must be a prerequisite. But certification will definitely give more opportunities for you to grow.

Just to remind of the original question of this trail is: What does geos first to get a Job, experience or certifications. It's is nice topic for beginners to understand and to have clear understanding of advantages of each one.

I saw a similar question in a site which I thought good to share...

"A position is a vailable for a Project Manager and there are three people apply for this position:

Applicant No.1 has 10+ years of PM experience, with no certs.
Applicant No.2 has 5+ years of PM experience, with PMP, PMI-SP, PMI-RMP, PMI-PBA, PMI-ACP certifications.
Applicant No.3 has -1 years of PM Junior experience, with CAPM certification.

Who do you think the company is going to hire?"

You can be as hypothetical as one can be - but these things are not about theory. In the example you just gave (from a website) is not logical. How can we include 3 with 2 and 1 - it is too far off.

The answer - there is no answer - it depends on the job and situation.

If we consider 1 and 2 are close enough and real scenario - I will take 1 - ALWAYS. Applicant 2 has cheated and PMI has helped him/her cheat. Just for fun!

Mounir I knew I'll get an answer like that, I made up the example not to take the direct quote from the other website, not sure I was allowed to put it here, but you can read the original question from Linda Leung, and I'm sure it is quite interesting...

Just as a clarification, certifications is not a priority for me anymore, but earning much more experience in those areas is my goal. YET, I still wouldn't quickly give experience as a first answer if my kid was to ask me for an advise.

That's just me, but my thought could change after reading from experts like you...

Thanks for the comments though. :)

I got my CAPM while doing something that wasn't project management related, but my boss allowed me to do some of the departmental PM tasks, which eventually led me to a job utilizing my certification and knowledge. I guess it all depends on where you are in life and what it is that you want and what the employer is looking for.
