Haitham Mokhtar Abdelaty Project Manager| Enerflex Ltd (MEA) Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Both are important
some time we get chance to work more and gain experience with no time to certify our knowledge, that's fine
If we can get certificate, there are 2 types, if it is knowledge certificate, then no experience is required, just add knowledge, but if it is professional certificate (the experience here is needed to know what is it all about, not to be imaginations)

For some certificates it is a prerequisite to have and demonstrate experience, then cannot be avoided !

Think I agree with Mounir !
Get foundation certifications then after gaining some experience, pursue the higher level or specialized certificates.

Experience first is much better because when you study to get certified you have the practice to move the literature into this.

Vyom Bharadwaj Senior Manager| Vodafone Group Pune, Maharashtra, India
Both of the approaches works hand-in-hand. It's like you adopt an agile approach to learning. Certifying to learn & earn and vice versa approach i.e. earn to get certified in order to enhance your chances to grab new opportunities. What matters is how you acquire an edge in a competitive professional environment.

TALES SENCO Project Manager| SENCO & FERRARI INFORMATICA Arujá, São Paulo, Brazil
Even though my experience had been the same as Michelle and Ranmali I think to get an initial certificate like Scrum Fundamentals Certified – SFC - or Project Management Associate - IPMA level D – is a good strategy.

Tales, so your input is to pursue the basic certifications as (SFC and IPMA), and then move on for some experience and finally pursue the other higher lever certs? Is this so?

Yes George, I think this is the best approach when possible.
