Scope Changes

We are going through a period of scope review on a project that I recently joined that has been behind. The project is now to a critical point and there are many stakeholders with a vested interest. I am initiating a new scoping effort to determine what to cut out or how to move the dates.
Are there any specific approaches being used that I should consider in reviewing scope..other than dollars?

Yes, I would focus on the value added to customers. Also the items that provide the best alignment to the organization's business objuectives should be a major point of focus. The best place to reduce scope is on "Nice to Have" items that add no real functional value to stakeholders.

Depending on how much time you have, you may want to the assess the risk of each change under consideration vs the risks of not changing. Not knowing your audience, I'd have to guess that they took their best shot at the original scope, so you will want to understand the issues behind that original thinking before altering it.
