How selective are you when someone requests to be included in your network? too often I see people without a profile nor much activity on there but they have very large networks. I tend to ignore these requests fearing they'll figure out a way to send me SPAM. What are your standards for accepting a request? How do you decide to whom you will submit a request? I truly enjoy the global reach of this site and accept most all requests. Unlike others such as LinkedIn or FB, I think you can do a better job of limiting the personal information that is shared. The bottom line for me, it's always about the network and you just never know when you may need that international connection or company contact, this site is perfect for that. Saving Changes...

I am a newbie in this and I have a small network. I have not rejected any requests but I left a few unanswered. I think this works differently than other social networks. Definitely I would not worry about spam. Saving Changes...

I believe it is always a win-win situation when it comes to networking because it (networking) has numerous benefits ranging from professional assistance to lifetime friendships between the involved parties. I would never decline an opportunity to network regardless of who the individual is. Saving Changes...
I accept all and I would say 99% of people here are professionals and educated. Surely I will learn something from them and vice versa. Saving Changes...

I've been on this site since 2007, and never had one connection until the last few months. Had rarely been to the site actually. I started exploring a few months ago. Ran across the "Build Your Network" page.
An interesting comment that projectmanagement.com places in the text of that page:
"Connecting on ProjectManagement.com is not necessarily about replicating real-world relationships. It's a way to expand the network of people who will be there to help you in the future."
I like the idea of having connections to ask questions of, and share my experiences with.
In addition, when I see someone has no connections so far, I consider the act of sending a connection request to them to be an "outreach" effort. Perhaps they too have been on here for months (or years) and nobody ever reached out to them before.
I have received numerous "thank you's" from people for reaching out to them. I've also received a couple of "don't you have enough connections already" type of messages. I politely explain my motivation, and don't pressure them to accept or do anything. Some readily accept at that point, some I never hear from again.
I also get a few requests to answer a few short questions for someone's college research paper, or start a dialog comparing notes on different industries and experiences. In my experience with having a large set of connections, I feel more connected here now than I would have imagined.
Certainly I don't have contact with everyone, but I gained exposure to people I would not have been exposed to otherwise.
In contrast, I have always kept my Facebook and LinkedIn connections/friends list small, although I did relax that somewhat with LinkedIn here lately, mostly from people who got a connection request here, and politely asked me to connect on LinkedIn because they do most of their networking on that site.
Just a couple of days ago I registered with a site to mentor a veteran who is looking to enter the civilian world as a project manager. That wasn't a direct result of a connection here, but it was a direct result of becoming more involved in this site.

I feel the same way. When someone who has just a few connections accepts my request, I hope that I will be able to help them at some point.
I do except all requests made to me. And I have had some wonderful interactions with people in my network.

I like that the bigger my network the more that shows up in my network news, and it's often dialogue that I want to get involved in. I was a bit selective at first, but I believe there's something I can learn from everyone, and I hope I have something to share as well. I would default everyone in my network if there was a simple 'add everyone' button :)
Hi Michelle,
Actually, there is an 'Add everyone in your chapter' button! -- once you enable it, your network increases dramatically.
I was very picky at the beginning, but no so much right now, even though I always read the bio and resume of the person sending a request before accepting the invite.
The first requests I received were very formal, the request was personalized and the person sent a private message afterwards to thank the invitation acceptance. I was really impressed and usually when I request a connection I do the same; would be nice to see that kind of formalism more often.
We had a recent chapter board election, and I checked the bios and resumes of the candidates here in projectmanagement.com, and voted upon what I evidenced on their profile. It was sad to see that some candidates didn't have anything in their profile.
Best regards, Saving Changes...
