Hi all,

I am exploring new ideas to be presented to my clients on outsourcing PM or elements of PM to low cost countries.

My clients are core engineering players and they have internal traditional sophisticated PM department.

Can you give your thoughts on,
(1) Which element of PM from an Engineering company can be outsourced?
(2) Which activities being done by an internal PM of Engineering/Manufacturing industries on day-to-day bases can be managed with outside Project Manager at lower cost and more effectively?
(3) Pros and Cons of doing so?
(4) Cost advantage it can bring to client?

Any other idea or experience shared by community will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear Outsourcing PM,

I have worked as a project manager for over 15 years and I'd be very careful outsourcing your clients PM work to low cost providers because in my opinion, the most important competency in project management is communication. If a PM is ineffective in communicating then you risk damaging your relationship with your clients which could be difficult to repair. So you might want to consider the risk verses reward when considering to outsource any of your clients PM work.

Sincerely,

Chad Harris

Well before outsourcing of project management you need to know first what is really needed to be outsourced because I somehow agree to Chad Harris with this one but still it will depend on you on how or what or when do you want to outsource. You need to be very careful when outsourcing you need to have a better communication and better understanding on what the deal is. You just need to study what is possible. While it is not entirely impossible to achieve #2 on your list, it comes with its own challenges. If you are able to find an effective communicator from the outside PM, then more than 50% of risk is eliminated. In terms of giving the kind of tasks, possibly(I hate to say, but to be efficient) updates to project documents, paper work, internal team meetings, I would give and keep any external client/customer communication to onsite PM or pertinent task taker(role)

Like my colleagues, I would try to retain the power management function within your company. I have rarely seen outsourced PM work well. If you do try it, make sure that the PM is not from the same organization as the outsourced project team.
