Strongly considering doing project management research

I am strongly considering doing project management research in combination with my day-to-day PM job. Unfortunately, since I am not in school at this time, my resources at PMI are non-existent. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can ease into research without being a student? I would really love to get involved, and potentially shift my career to something more research based, but just not sure what my options are without committing to school once again.

Thanks

Celisse,

I don't have experience doing this, but wanted to provide some thoughts putting myself in your shoes... Since 'project management research' is such a broad field, perhaps I would think about narrowing it down to a shortlist of a few specific topics... perhaps you pick a certain type of methodology (e.g. Agile), an aspect (e.g. PMO) etc.; as well as an objective - what do you want to do with this topic?

Then perhaps find focus groups, meetups, etc. that may be focused on that topic/objective, joining like-minded individuals and formulate a path. Perhaps you can use the tools that this site offers to formulate a path as well.

As a parallel activity, I would apply to volunteer as an SME Reviewer for one of the PMI congresses to broaden perspective and see interrelationships between topics.

Wish you the best!

Hi Samuel,

Thanks for the advice.I do have a more narrowed focus it's just that all of PMI's resources are only for actual students. I really do like the idea of volunteering as a SME. I will do research this weekend.

Hi Celisse,

you should first contact your local PMI chapter; often they have research departments or may be they could help you out with some recommondations.
Another option would be looking for research related voluntteering options at PMI.org.

Celisse,

you might want to check out
http://www.pmi.org/membership/vrms-volunte...ent-system.aspx
Here PMI offers local and global volunteer opportunities, some are related to research like standards development. As these opportunities pop up for 3-4 weeks only it is best to add your profile, your interests and an alert if these are met.

Another idea would be to check out http://pmworldlibrary.net/students/, where you can find student internships offering research opportunities. Not sure if you qualify, but asking is free.

And my last idea is to sign up to http://www.pmi.org/learning/academic-resea...c-network.aspx, which gives you access to PMI research resources and helps you grow a network.

Your goal must be defined, and how you are able to achieve your goal within expected time frame.
