Late this summer I am responsible for moving a data center to a new building. I've already begun planning for the move, meeting with vendors, etc. However, never having done this before, I am looking for notice of pitfalls I won't think of until I'm falling into them. Any suggestions? Is there a MSProject template for this, or does someone want to share theirs with me? Any help appreciated.

George, Did you have any luck with a project plan for your data center move? I just came from a meeting and I was asked to be Project Manager for a data center move that begins right after July 4, 2002.

Can you let know if you have had any feedback.
Thanks.

I've been involved in a number of data center moves and have found the following items to be "gotchas" to watch out for:

Voice and data circuit coordination - coordinating with your ISP and or/telephone service provider(s) in advance is critical to ensure that service is available at the new location, i.e. you want to make sure you have dial tone and Internet access available when you arrive at the new location.

DNS cutover - this is a big issue if you are a service provider, or are hosting a web site that requires high availability.

The list goes on and on, but these two jump out as the ones that I've seen cause problems again and again.

Feel free to call me.

A couple of items to keep in mind:
- Facilities
- power
- air conditioning
- cabling
- Where are your patch panels going to be

- Network:
- port distribution
- switch location

Determine what you need for documentation. Start it up at the very beginning. It helps down the line.

To carry on Patrick's comment - double check all coordination, especially with outside suppliers, especially ciruits.

Good luck & have fun

If you're planning to do a tape backup/restore of the servers, I would say do NOT, as in DO NOT assume the tapes will work on restoration. We went through a mock restoration on a two phased data center move (first test & development boxes, then production) and the first restoration of our nice backup tapes took three full days.

I need templates for A data center consolidation and move. Lessons learned would be great, but mainly looking for a WBS for the move.

I am looking for information on moving a data center from one building to another. Is anyone familiar with a book called Move IT by Paul Friday? WBS would be great or additional pitfalls to look into.

I did two data center moves in 2003. First, I led a move out of our second site (hosted by Exodus) back to our homebase. Then, I moved our second site into a new building where we were hosting. Here's some of what I learned.

*Telco requirements had the longest lead times. Ordering anything over a T1 took a *really* long time, especially when you get to OC3's and OC12s and the like.

*Building out your power requirements and environmental issues usually comes next. In my case, the relocation to the homebase wasn't that hard, but building out for the new data center required extensive electrical contracting.

*Depending on the size of the gear you're moving, you have to make sure the new space has properly reinforced floors. Some of our storage gear requires reinforced tiles, and we could've risked losing some HUGE money when one of our systems threatened to crush a perforated tile during the move out. (Oh, and hire IT-certified movers only. All moving companies are not created equal).

*It's critical to have your information security team inspect the new data center for physical and/or data security. Ours found about 40 things wrong with our former second site (which we then were able to implement into our next choice).

I hope some of these help. I realize it's now late fall, but if not helpful to the originator, at least it'll be used by someone.

I need helps from gurus for templates on a data center consolidation and move, integrating 2 main server room, 1 PABX room, and HVAC into 1 big area. The move is from floor 9 to 19, in the same building, with different elevator entrance.
Lessons learned and contigency plan would be great, but mainly looking for a WBS for the move.

Has anyone found a wbs for moving a data center to an alternate location.
I am looking at the logistics in the planning and over view of the MPP developemnt. I will add all the details but need a good template to get moving.
Thanks,
Kurt
