In the Initial stage of the project at the planning stage when the design step is in progress
what are the checkpoints that needs to be taken care of while co-ordinating with the structural drawings ?
For eg look for the shafts and so on .
Any checklist that needs to be followed by Project Manager as normally we have seen in practice if no shaft left then do core cut etc .

I don't have any input, but just a suggestion that if you tag this question with the CONSTRUCTION Practice Area, you may reach the right people

In theory - technical design issues are not the PM responsibility. A PM should not be involved in tis work.

For example, I am a civil engineer and still have no idea what you are talking about here since it is a purely engineering - design question.

Prashant,

While design is being developed, it is of great benefit if you look for value engineering when it comes to design.

Getting too deep into the drawings is purely the responsibility of the engineering department, yet, the PM should review some important things like opportunities to do value engineering by changing the design here and there, etc.

for me it is not necessary your role to study in details the drawings. But as PM, it is great criteria if you do have excellent technical knowledge. Even as PM, you should be able what the data or information that you need from the drawings that you received.

For engineers under you, they may need to know the details. For you maybe surface only or any only critical information. TQ

Guys, let us be real. This is the traditional question that always come up in one variation or another.

OK - let us ask it in a different way;

- Assuming I am the PM responsible for leading the engineering and construction of a petrochemical plant. In this type of facilities we need chemical engineers, electrical, civil (foundation, structural), instrument and controls system, etc.

- Also assuming that I am an industrial engineer

How can I review drawings from the various domains? What experience or competence do I have? What do I know "technical" aspects to recommend design changes for value management or other purposes. How do I know if an engineer is under or over sizing a design item (cable, switch, shaft, beam, foundation, conduit, etc.)?
