I was wondering why Theories of Motivation specifics are missing from PMBOK while questions exist on the test regarding Maslow, McGregor, etc ??

Many other things as well you can't find them in the PMBOK but you might find them in the exam. Studying the PMBOK alone is not enough - You have to refer to other references like Rita Mulcahy's Exam prep and others.

yes true. I was persuing the RITA book. Very extensive. Going to Barnes and Noble this weekend to buy it. I actually studied Maslow in Sociological Anthropolgy many moons ago and it was real interesting at that level. I am studying as much as I can, and going to attend more networking. Just joined this fantastic community filled with all of you brilliant people. WHERE WERE YOU when I was creating and managing non-PMBOK projects in early 2000!? LOL

Rita & PMBOK are more than enough Steve and you need to solve simulation questions as well (Not the free ones).

While you were creating and managing non-PMBOK projects, we were busy doing the same - We learn PM the hard just like you did which is the best way but educational certifications adds value of course especially these days !

Good Luck with you Studies & Exam !

Even when I took the exam in 2003, more than 20% of the questions were outside of the PMBOK.

Hello,

like my colleagues already posted, there is not only the PMBoK Guide. This is the foundation of the PMP and about 75% to 80% of the questions should be covered by it, but - like mentioned in the PMP content outline and handbook - there is still some other materiual to study, like the "code of ethics" for instance.
In addition to the both books mentioned here you should go for a course -live or online - and i guess you need to also for the reason of the 35 contact hours, right? But in these courses there will be talked also about those topics which ar enot in the PMBoK Guide.

Please refer to this guide here for additional information which might be helpful for you:

And if you are interested in doing an online, self-paced training not only for the 35 contact hours but for studying purposes also than i would recommend the PMPrepcast by Cornelius Fichtner:

Please let me know if i could be of any further assistence on your way to PMP.

Markus
PMBOK alone does not get us through PMP exam. It is Rita's PMP Exam Prep book which is quite exhaustive, yet easy to understand that helped me in getting PMP certification.
Apart from PMBOK which sets guidelines for project management principles, only book I referred was Rita's.

Not sure if you are a member of PMI. You can access other standard guidelines in PDF. The exam is beyond PMBOK. If you are not a member, I suggest you enroll. You will get your money back through discounts including the exams, books etc. Not to mention free PDF sources of standard guidelines.
