Data analytics is the science of gaining insights from data. This usually involve the use of statistical tool, operation research, simulation or artificial intelligence tools to turn data into a model. The data model will provide insights on some issues that the organization may or may not know. In other words, the data model provide insights on some business (in this case project management) issues. With these insights, a project organization can then make informed decision to improve its capability.
Yes, project metrics can provide useful input for project data analytics. To be useful, the PMIS needs to collect more data, e.g., the experience and personal attributes of project managers. Training and certification issues, etc. If relevant data is available, project data analytics can provided insight such as:
1) Are project managers with PMP certification more competent than those who has not
