What are some of the best ways to introduce project management procedures to an organization who has never used formal pm before? This is a new objective where I work and myself and my supervisor have been tasked as the "PMO." Neither of us have any formal PM training or experience. But I did take a course and pass for my CAPM.

Julie,

From your description, it sounds like your organization has bought into the need for a PMO for the right reasons, not just to say you have a PMO. I agree 100% with Mounirs advice. Since nobody in your organization has experience with PMOs, you really need outside professional assistance.

Think of it as trying to instill good habits: work on getting one process going, then move on to another one.

Trying to bring about too many changes too quickly will only get you push-back from the PMs and project teams.

Hi Julie, you are a member of PMI Oklahoma chapter, thats good, take your C-level to some events. Here we have happy hours, conferences, informal meetings, I think you have almost the same in your chapter. It is a good oportunity to introduce project management for someone. Good luck.

Hi Julie,

There are nice business games around project management, if you were in Europe I would propose you mine. But a serious game or business game can create awareness in all the important stakeholders about why a project management methodology is important and what are the best practices to use in your domain and your company culture.

Take your time and communicate a lot in order to involve every stakeholder.

It can help also to work around some business KPI and target that are related to the projects you will need to develop.

Enjoy the challenge
