We have been using a PM software since July 2014 and it is overbearing and getting very little buy-in to use. What are some recommendations? Especially for organization new to PM, intuitive, easy for internal staff and external collaborators, and mostly scientific research projects. Currently some of our top picks are Wrike, Asana, Easy Projects and Smartsheet. We also need ease of use of upper mgmt to view reports.

If the software tool does not map your project management process then it will be allways obsolete.

To follow on Sergio's feedback, you will need to evaluate the "cost" of switching over. It sounds like your current tool might not be given the support it deserves. Don't expect the new tool to fix something that is wrong at the organization level.
