Hello everyone.
Hope everything is fine,
I'd like to ask you as per your experience in project management field. is it better for us to use WBS in a hierarchal format ? or in a text format just with identification codes ?
The question with another wording, is it a must to have a hierarchal WBS ?
I am not a software expert so I do not know all software capabilities for WBS. I know there is WBS Pro - which is specific to do WBS; one of my colleagues like it. I personally use Mind Manager - because I use it for various things.
For simple projects - the Smart Art feature in MS Office can do it for you.
MS Project and Primavera - have a WBS but not sure if they show the WBS graphically. But these tools are best for scheduling using a WBS but not for Graphical Top Down view.

I think a hierarchical presentation is better, it make it simpler to explain. Many tools will do Mounir listed to most common.
I often use iThoughtsX to get thing organise, and simple for presenting to others.

This proves that hierarchical presentation is the best (my opinion as well).
Thanks.

I would save your current textual content for the WBS Dictionary.
Some PM's in different organizations don't have WBS dictionary. Saving Changes...

Ahmed, Both Graphical (hierarchical, pictorial) and textual (outline) ways of creating a WBS have their own utility. One is not necessarily better than the other. Briefly, hierarchical is good for presentations and top level analysis. Textual is good for low level assignments and project tracking. I would recommend that you start with a hierarchical as it gives better visual orientation. In the starting use the white board and post-its. You should involve your core team while preparing the WBS. Once you have defined the top 3-4 levels, you can start using a s/w. At this point you should translate the hierarchical WBS to textual. Hope it helps.

A WBS dictionary is always helpful but there is no need to create a document for it. One should use the software/scheduling tools for this purpose.
