Some time back I cam across an article which stated that only 37% of the projects are only successful. That interested me to know why rest of the 63% failed ?
So does that mean still in today's complex times 63% of world projects did not apply PM methodology, and if they do then still applying it did not helped ???
Would like to know you comments on this Saving Changes...

The application of PM methodology is not a guarantee that the project will be successful; it provides a methodology, tools, techniques, etc. to perform a more standardized project management (i.e. applicable in very distinct fields)
Most likely, the article measured success/failure of projects with respect to (i.e. negative variance) in scope/schedule/budget. As we may see in many projects around the world (a clear example are building projects), these are typically delayed and with large overshoots in budget. Saving Changes...
I agree with Eduard that the application of PM methodology is not a guarantee that the project will be successful.
In terms of the 37%-63%: I feel (so don't ask me to back this up with evidence) - that looking forward we are focused on the originally defined objectives, triple constraints etc. and feel that we are doing well; however, the evaluation/looking backward/retrospective is focused on whether or not the organization got the benefits it was looking for from this project. A lot of times, there was an organizational shift during the project and there needed to be a shift in the project objectives, but that realignment did not occur due to various reasons. Bottom line, we need to ensure consistent metrics and measurement forward and backward.
Saurabh: I was talking in a vacuum, so it would be useful to actually see the article you are referencing Saving Changes...

Saurabh: the best place to go to find the answers is the PMI itself where you can read what does statistics mean. And remember: you ever, ever are applying project magement when you work with an initiative. Formal or informal, but you are applying it. Saving Changes...
