I am a PMP with 10 years of experience and a CSM but I have no agile experience. I am on a job hunt and would like to work in Agile, but everyone wants experience. Any ideas on where to gain it? Even volunteer work. Thanks.

Interesting to hear you're certified Scrummaster but still getting neglected. I do find some employers seem to be very inflexible with 'experience' requirements. In my opinion, if you're a good PM you can adapt to new products, industries, and in this case methodologies and still be successful. I agree it can sometimes be a hard sales pitch if an organization has already made up their minds.

Good luck!

William,

I would recommend checking out www.volunteermatch.org and micromentor.org to see if you can find local/virtual opportunities. Additionally, you could find local Agile Networking groups and get connected... perhaps there will be more flexibility with the experience requirement if you go through known parties

Wish you the best!

An other option would be Prince2 Agile certification or other certifications that confirm understanding but don't ask for experience.

That is a route PMI should also go have PMP(experienced) and PMP jr(no experience), yes there is CAPM but once you have experience you need to apply again. They should do it for all certification a full and a junior.

Hi William,

Great you are also thinking of volunteer work. Just head right over to VRMS - PMI's volunteer database where you find many opportunities: http://vrms.pmi.org/

As I can see you are a member of the NJ Chapter I strongly recommend reaching out to your local chapter: http://www.pminj.org/ - Get in touch with them as this is your community. They share insights, opportunities, and the network not only regarding traditional PM, but also when thinking of agile, lean etc.

All the best!!

Have you tried Toastmasters? One of the advanced leadership requirements is High-Performance Leadership, where you lead and manage a project. You could apply an agile mindset to it.

I constantly use Toastmasters to increase my leadership skills, both formally and informally.

Toastmasters is much more than just public speaking. Leadership has always been a strong part of it. In fact, the whole program is divided into a communication track and a leadership track. Check it out, William.
