Tough questions, me myself before never identify what steps should i go through in my career development. But as above steps good as guidance for you to identity your career path.

Maybe one i want to add is to do " strengths and weaknesses" analyses, from there you can know what the area that you have capable with. And the mitigation for the area that you weak..

Stretch your comfort zone. You want to get comfortable with discomfort.

Anupam, it's interesting how different people view career development, which outside of government, is driven primarily by social networking and getting to know those who need the skills and services of a project manager. I've been learning this myself. Ironically, applying project management logic and process to career development, even if it is a career in project management, doesn't work. People hire people they like and/or those who can make (save) them money. So I would agree with your step 3, and step 6, in that 6 is actually networking and letting people know you have an interest and asking them to help you find opportunities once you have developed a relationship. Of course it's a two way street - you should also offer and actively try, to help them if you're in a position to do so.

As a follow-up to Erik's point, I suggest networking should be a high priority. Make a point of meeting new people and keeping touch with them. Don't worry about whether they are in your interested industry or not. Networking is about breadth, not depth.

Hi Anupam, identifying some career goals and developing an action plan to reach these is helpful. This can include working with a mentor, building your network, and volunteering to gain new skills. You may like this article I wrote recently:
