As a PM how do you plan goal setting for team/team member? What are the outcomes of the goal setting discussion? Any tools or techniques used?

I have used simple excel sheet to circulate among the team mentioning expectation from them for the next 6 months as well 1 goal as per employee in it. Along with that we have to enter the data in online application.
Outcome of the discussion is normally the work/output project expects from the employee mentioning it in points, plus one goal the employee aims for which is aligned with the project objective.
Technique is to build a good relation with each employee, this gives you better insight into his/her capabilities which makes the discussion very fruitful. Because just burdening the person with goals is not going to help project or the employee.Plus keep an eye on project plan for next 6 months. Because every employee's goal achievement should result as benefit for the project and employee.

Goals have to be aligned with organizational strategy. That is because some "cascade" method will used to derivate team goals from organizational goals. A recommendation is to group goals into categories and do not have more than two goals defined (one is good) for each category. The attribute to use is SMART attribute when you define goals.

Outcomes of goal setting discussions are the goals for Project and Individuals. The outcome varies based on goals being set. If the goals are set for project, it may result in a detailed tracking sheet. If you are discussing the goals for Organization, it will result in strategy document.

Year end appraisals are tied up with Project & Individual Goals. Strategic goals are planned much before.

If only this is team accomplishment, else it is individual accomplishment.
