The good thing about project management is that it is a very wide field. You can work within an organization, you can work as a consultant, you can work in business development and management. At some point in time, this flexibility helped me continue on the path I was pursuing by finding new opportunities that might not have been 100% in line with the type of projects I used to manage before but at the end of the day the Project Management aspect of the job was definitely related to my field of expertise.

I prefer the 'mile wide - inch deep' type of work... my PM career helps me accomplish it. Having said that, I would like to think that I am more than an 'inch deep' in project management expertise :-)
