Asking for some tip on how to handle a task like the following:

Task name: purchase fiber
Task duration :40 days (1 day to do the purchase order, 39 days of delivery time)
Resource name: J.Brown

I am wondering how to put in ms project this kind of activity. I do not want to have J. Brown to be considered fully engaged for 40 days and I would highlight that most of the time is a waiting,

Thanks

I would make them two tasks with a Finish to Start dependency. Assign J. Brown only to the "do purchase order" task, which may take 0.5 days. delivery of the fiber cannot start until J Brown has made de PO, and anything after that will depend on the fiber beeing delivered.

Two options:

A. Make task Purchase Order last one day, and then add another task "delivery" last 39 days

B. Make one task called "Purchase order and delivery" last 1 day and linked to the following task with a lag of 39 days (FS + 39)

There are two different cases here....

1. If J.Brown is dedicate to the entire procurement activity then just create two tasks...one is to create Purchase order and allocate J.Brown to that task only...and create 2nd task with 39 days and no allocation of J.Brown....as guided by Mr. Alejandro....

2. If J.Brown is not dedicated then as guided by Mr. Eduard creat two task and in MS-Project give 1 day duration to each task and link both task with FS+39days duration...so you will get total duration of 40 days with only two days allocation of Resource Mr. J.Brown....

That is very nice question and answered by both the Seniors....Mr. Alejandro & Mr. Eduard....

This a great question because it begs an answer to how does one enter DELIVERY time when Scheduling Resources and when Developing a Schedule.

For the delivery (waiting for material to arrive) maybe a milestone instead of a task would make more sense. You are not going to show the progress of "delivery" by percentage! And you are not using any resources. So as guys suggested make a .5 day long task for putting the order in and then a milestone 39 days later for the delivery.
