I am a new Technology Manager with plenty of management experience but not alot in technology. Any inspiring information would be appreciated. Saving Changes...
I don't know whether this falls under "inspiring information" or "obvious advice," but (as an old generalist manager myself, with a fair amount of breadth of knowledge and only pockets of depth) maintain your humility...don't try to fake experience and knowledge, but instead respect, rely on, and reward your domain experts for their contributions. Keep them happy and productive, and you will be the same. Saving Changes...
To add to Frank's wisdom, don't try to become the subject matter expert, either. That's not your job. But, it doesn't hurt to actively strive to understand technology issues.
Bad Example:
Joe Engineer: There's a bug in SQL Server, and none of our update statements will run!
Lousy Manager: Whatever, you guys are the experts. Just take care of it.
Good Example:
Joe Engineer: There's a bug in SQL Server, and none of our update statements will run!
Good Manager: OK, what's the impact on our applications? Could you explain to me a bit more about how that works? What alternatives do we have?
Obviously, that's an exaggeration. Saving Changes...
