A PMs career depends a lot on how team, management & stakeholders feel about him/her, and whether or not how they provide support. One sharp word, bad temper or mishandled conflict can damage a relationship intensely.

If I want to cultivate such an environment on my project (and obviously I'd want to), it has to start from me. I would treat everyone in a respectful, understanding, non-judgmental way. When team members realize that you're always positive and respectful, they will respond adequately.
You're right - even one small misstep, or a bad temper outburst can ruin the hard work put into building a positive environment. A PM should always be in control of his emotions/mood. In some ways, it's similar to being a psychotherapist. PM has to be the calmest and the most non-judgmental person in the team. Saving Changes...

I want an environment where differences are respected and appreciated and collaboration and working as a member of a team is more important than the individual. To create such an environment, we need to enable for collaboration and ensure an understanding of cultural differences. This is often done through ensuring processes, procedures and best practices that are developed collaboratively and enforced by all.
