IMO they both are totally different requiring two different set of skills. Some overlapping though like communication skills. but the manner in which they are carried out also differ. I mean for a business analyst knowing his team members well who are going the develop the product/service is not of that importance (emotional intelligence for instance) but the same is crucial for project manager to get the output. Business Analysis and Project Management definately are complementary disciplines. Business Analysis is focused on the product or solution being developed, enhanced or maintained whereas project management is focused on the project where the work is being performed. Yes, I agree with David. Both the Business Analysis and Project Management are complementary activities. 1. The responsibility for defining product scope is assigned to the resources that have business subject matter expertise. Defining Product Scope comes under activities of Business Analysis. 2. Depending on product and product quality of service requirements needed Project Management defines the amount of work required (Project Scope) to achieve those required items. Inside the Project Scope, the Product Scope can also be included Thus, Business Analysis and Project Management are interconnected activities.

BA and PM quite different roles. While PM leads, BA is more of a information structuring.
I have tried in the past to go for BA roles using my PM experience and it did not work. BA is very specific to information structuring and gathering. No "real" decision making in BA, but more a support role for PM. Saving Changes...

The best place to understand that is inside the PMI´s Practitioners Guide for Business Analsysis. Mainly when you read the "Collaboration Points". I have the opportunity to work from the "genesis" of Business Analysis with the IIBA and I have the opportunity to work with the PMI in both related standards creation. Business Analysis process start before a project exists (the first deliverable is a business case), continue during the whole project process mainly to help the project manager in value administration, and still remains active when project ends. Bussiness Analysis focus is the product/service/result that best fits as the solution for the business problem. Project Management focus is the work needed to create the product/service/result.
