Many of us already practice project management before getting a PMP. However as rightly mentioned by many colleagues, one can learn to apply best practices more consistently ( for example communicating more proactively with stakeholders, understanding stakeholders' importance for project success) in actual projects while preparing for the examination. After passing the exam, one takes the process further by putting all the pieces ( read project management knowledge areas) into a cohesive well-knit unit, aimed at project success.
